Cardiologists Who Are Getting Serious About Winning the War Against Heart Disease

In his article “What Paleo Gets Right”, vegan cardiologist Joel Kahn MD shares his surprise on how much he agrees with Loren Cordain Ph.D – the author of “The Paleo Diet”.  He lists seven of Cordain’s recommendations with which he essentially agrees:

  1. Limit cheese, butter and bacon
  2. Limit processed meats, whole dairy and many bakery items
  3. Limit saturated fats from fatty meats because they cause atherosclerosis
  4. Fill your plate with fruits and vegetables
  5. Avoid processed foods
  6. Stay away from high fructose corn syrup
  7. Go easy on eggs

Dr, Kahn writes “The only fundamental area of disagreement is whether or not the plate includes lean meats, fish and seafood.”   I’m not sure why Dr. Kahn does not mention that most Paleo advocates (based on my investigation) also avoid all grains and legumes (beans, peas and lentils). In fact, cardiologist and Paleo diet follower, James O’Keefe MD, recommends avoiding grains – especially wheat. Although I don’t agree with some of Dr. Okeefe’s recommendations, I am pleased that he at least emphasizes the importance of diet and lifestyle. Many cardiologists barely discuss dietary change with their patients.

And most cardiologists that do discuss diet, do not discuss the dietary option that can actually reverse atherosclerosis – a low fat WFPB diet.

On the bright side, more and more cardiologists are starting to see the light.

Here are some cardiologists that help their patients avoid stent and bypass surgeries by recommending plant based diets. They give me hope that the WFPB lifestyle approach to treating coronary artery disease will become the default approach when attacking America’s # 1 killer.
